Adopters will have to return the hamster. Failure to do so will be reported to Carousell, blacklisted and banned from the group. ----------🛡️Screening Options⚔️---------- 1️⃣Go to their house and check their cage. No risk of fake cage photos or lies. This method is commonly used in other countries and even some licensed animal organization in SG. [This is probably the least preferred way for us in SG. However should anyone decided to go with this, never never go alone. Safety first, go in a group of about three. For those inviting adopters to your house, never do it when you are alone too. Always have someone with you. If you are a child, ALWAYS ALWAYS have adults with you when you are trying to screen with this method.] 2️⃣Taking photos and sending it. To prevent people using fake photos, here is an example. R-Rehomer(Hamster owner giving hamster up for adoption.) A-Adopter(Someone trying to adopt hamster from R). R and A appointed a Saturday to do a screening, for about an hour. In this hour, R and A have to reply each other as fast as they can type. R started asking questions about hamster care. (Kind of like a pop quiz with mix of questions. Make a time limit so they cannot last minute go google.) After that, R have A take a picture of A holding a T-shirt over A's hamster cage using Carousell PM camera feature and send. The above is an example. The main point here is to give them no chance to photoshop or find a fake picture. What R has to keep in mind: Time given must be reasonable. The content of the photo must not be ridiculous. You are NOT allowed to ask R for any private particulars since you are not any law enforces or organization. Even legit law enforces and organization will NOT ask for particulars this way, much less for R, since R is just someone who is putting hamster up for adoption. What A has to keep in mind: If A is not sincere, do not waste R's and A's time. End the screening, do not adopt. A has no obligation to continue if A finds screening troublesome. If screening is troublesome for A, then A should not even be keeping hamsters, since hamsters need water change and play time daily, cage clean monthly (depending on cage size), and etc. Both should also keep in mind that, like in any private chats, if you are harassed or bullied by the other party, report to the relevant people to seek help. If you have any other dynamic screening options, feel free to comment below or PM us. -------------------- Share us your thoughts and feedback. (Edited on 10-01-2019 08:03PM)

Updated as of 19 Feb 2019, Tuesday [CONTENT] 1) The 6 Species 2) The Cage 3) Cage Accessories 4) Bedding 5) The Wheel 6) Food 7) Cleanliness 8) Taming 9) Where to get a hamster? 10) Healthcare 11) Places to Shop for Items 1) The 6 Species Just to preface, golden hamster, teddy bear hamster, sapphire, pudding are NOT species, they are just nicknames. Variation in coat colour and length depends on genetics. Hamsters do not have breeds, and different species cannot be bred together. Syrian Largest species, is solitary and cannot be kept together. Needs larger toys and wheel, has a reputation for being easier to handle than most others. Fur coat lengths, colours and patterns vary greatly. Very demanding for space, so “cage rage” behaviour occurs more often. More on how to prevent these behaviours later. Females tend to be bigger, and more outgoing than males. Roborovski Smallest of all hamsters . Can generally use most toys and hideouts. Very quick and skittish, this hamster is usually known for its difficulty in handling and taming. Experienced owners would be a better fit. Can get quite greasy, so sand bath is compulsory. Campbell’s and Winter White Dwarves Campbell’s are very closely related to WWs but are very uncommon. Both look very similar in coat colours, with the well known stripe down their backs. Prone to diabetes, feed fruits and sugary treats in moderation. Known to toss and tumble in sand to clean themselves. Hybrid (aka Pudding) Cross between winter white and campbell’s. A man made species that’s relatively common in SG. Hamsters are crepuscular meaning they are more active during dusk and dawn. They are also prey animals meaning they have high stress and anxiety levels. Not all are cuddly and can be mostly observational pets. Dwarves of the same species can be kept together in even numbered, same sex pairs but only experienced owners should attempt. (unwanted pregnancy, buying wheel for each hamster) Fighting may also occur if the hamsters are not compatible, regardless if they are siblings or parent and child. 2) The Cage We recommend a bare minimum of 2903 sq cm/450 sq inches (length x width) of continuous floor space, but 600 sq inches/3870 sq cm is recommended. Levelled/multi-storied cages do not add on to floor space as it is not continuous, and can be dangerous if the hamster falls. Generally a cage that is 80cm x 50cm is recommended for hamsters. Make sure your cage has good ventilation, and is not placed under direct sunlight. Unsuitable cages: - Acrylic cages (can be custom made to be suitable) - multi-storey cages (levels do not add floor space) - habitrails - most pet store cages (usually overpriced and small) Recommended and more easily found in Singapore : - Savic Sky Metro Cage - Alaska Cage - Zoozone 2 cage - Savic Plaza Knock Down - Savic Ruffy 2 - Savic Rody Cavia (only for dwarves) - Custom made acrylic cages Recommended DIY cages (from IKEA): - DETOLF - SAMLA 130L - Linnmon (watch VanillaHamHam’s DIY video) - Lack (watch ErinsAnimals DIY video) 3) Cage Accessories Food bowl must be large enough for hamster to sit in. Water bottle/ water bowl should be provided. Make sure to provide hideouts and safe chew toys. Hamsters do have preferences for chew toys and it may take a while to figure out what your hamster likes. Whimzees small dog chews work very well and are perfectly safe for hamsters. DIY toys made from toilet paper rolls and kitchen towel rolls are cheap alternatives. If you want to look for how to DIY toilet roll toys, watch ErinsAnimals’ video on DIY toys. Do not give mineral chews or salt licks to any animal, they are unnecessary and harmful. 4) Bedding Safe To Use: Aspen wood shavings (Kaytee Aspen), Kaytee Clean & Cozy paper bedding, Crittercare paper bedding, Oxbow Pure Comfort paper bedding, Boxo bedding, Carefresh paper bedding, shredded paper towel/toilet paper. Unsafe To Use: Cotton/fluffy bedding, Newspaper, Sawdust, Softwood shavings (Pine, cedar, etc), Cat litter. At least 5-10 cm of depth throughout the cage. Hamsters are burrowing animals, i.e. they like to dig. You can dedicate an area of the cage to have a high depth/make a digging tower for your hamster’s digging needs. Note that if your hamster is allergic to wood shavings, aspen is not suited for it. 5) The Wheel Only use wheels with solid surfaces, mesh and wire wheels are painful and dangerous as they can cause bumblefoot. Wheel sizes depend on your hamster’s size, as long as the hamster’s spine is straight while running it can be used. Usually, 20cm diameter for dwarves, 30cm diameter for syrians. You may have to change the wheel as the hamster grows. Do not keep them in a small wheel as it is very painful for their spine. Back problems will eventually arise with prolonged use of inappropriate wheel. 🐹Credits to Hamster Help Singapore for the picture on recommended wheels. 6) Food Hamsters are omnivorous, like humans, hence they require a diet with more protein. It is ideal to feed them fresh veggies and hamster safe food like tofu on odd days to give them a varied diet. Note that these foods should be given in small portions. 6< months old: 19-20% protein 7-8% fat 8-10% fibre 6-18 months old: 17-18% protein 6-7% fat 10-12% fibre >18 months old: 15% protein 6-7% fat 12-15% fibre Our recommended diet: Versele Laga Hamster Nature + Mazuri Rat & Mouse/Supreme Science Selective pellets + fresh food every other day in moderation We suggest using Mazuri for syrians, and SSS for dwarves and roborovskis. For more info on hamster safe food, look here: http://hamsterhideout.com/forum/topic/96457-hamster-nutrition-v-safe-fruits-vegetables-and-other-dietary-supplements/#entry982830 Food brands to avoid: Delikate Maqnum Happi Hamster Burp! OLA Vitakraft (except VitaSmart and VitaNature) Kaytee Hazel/ Harry Hamster (from Tiny Friends Farm) Oxbow It is not recommended to feed what your hamster likes, as they may not be getting a healthy and balanced diet. It’s like feeding a kid McDonald’s only because they like it, instead of giving them vegetables which are good for them. If your hamster is not eating, it can be due to stress or the food you are using. If you’re feeding the recommended diet, leave the food in until they finish. More info on food: https://sg.carousell.com/g/hamster-sg/🍽the-food-post-bn-vl-and-more/f8879303-eff8-11e8-8bfb-0a580a040560 7) Cleanliness Hamster clean themselves like cats, and only need a sand bath in their cage. Only use unscented chinchilla sand, not dust or scented sand. Some tried and tested sand are Versele Laga Chinchilla Sand, Reptisand, and kid’s play sand. Try to shake or sift out any dust in the sand. Water destroys their natural body oils which is vital to their fur and health. DO NOT BATHE YOUR HAMSTER WITH WATER. In cases where you really do need to remove something from your hamster, do so with a moist cotton bud or a slightly damp cloth to gently remove the substance. The smaller your cage is, the lesser the bedding you use, which means you have to do full clean outs and spot clean more often. This is why it is good to have more bedding in your cage, as you would have to clean out less bedding less often. Spot cleaning is taking out the urine stained bedding and replacing with fresh bedding. Hamsters usually pee in the corners and in their nests. They prefer to have their territory smell familiar to them so it is important to retain that smell by leaving a clean third of their old bedding in full clean outs. They poop everywhere and it’s more uncontrolled than pee, so you shouldn’t worry too much. They even ingest their poop and it is perfectly normal. You can potty train your hamster, to make cleaning easier. 8) Taming Once you first get your hamster back leave it for 1 week to let it adapt to its new environment. You can begin taming after that. Note that taming varies between hamsters and again there is no fixed way of doing it. You can get a playpen or have a hamster safe room to use as part of the taming process. Watch ErinsAnimals or Victoria Raechel (on YouTube) for hamster taming. Good treats to use would be mealworms, various seeds such as sunflower seeds or you could try fresh veg or fruit. Dwarf hamsters are very prone to diabetes so it is recommended to use treats in moderation. 9) Looking for a hamster? Try to search for hamsters up for adoption. Avoid buying from backyard breeders which are uncertified people who casually breed hamsters in relatively poor conditions for profit and little knowledge about their care. Give yourself a week before deciding to get an animal to avoid impulse buying. Please ensure that if you do intend to buy, that you check the breeder’s husbandry and the conditions they keep their hamsters in. Buying hamsters from breeders that keep hamsters in bad conditions is only supporting their business. Places to adopt hamsters can include shelters such as SPCA and Hamster Society Singapore, or you could take a look at SPCA’s rehoming notice board to view if there are any hammies in need of a new home. 10) Healthcare In the event of your hamster displaying signs of illness, I have attached a picture that shows the various vets with experience with hamsters. Vet care is important and bills can be anywhere from around $100 and more. Vet consultations are usually around $40, medicine will be extra. You should be able to afford healthcare before adopting a hamster. 🐹Credits to Hamster Help Singapore for the vet list Common problems : Dwarves are prone to diabetes and should be fed treats and high sugar foods in MODERATION. Wet tail is a stress based disease that’s common in young syrians that is often fatal. Diarrhoea can be caused by stress or sudden change in diet. Hair loss can be due to mites or old age, excessive scratching is also a symptom of mites. Nails need to be trimmed and can be done by either using rough stones or surfaces like raw wood. Their teeth are constantly growing and can be maintained by using chew toys. Cage bar biting is bad and can break their teeth. You may take your hamster to the vet for tooth trimming and nail trimming. 11) Places to shop for items Online stores: moomoopets.sg - shipping is $10 - free shipping on orders above $80 nekojam.com - look at website for shipping policy polypet.com.sg - shipping is $10 - free shipping on orders above $100 petsstation.com.sg - shipping is $20 - free shipping on orders above $55 theonepet.com.sg - shipping is $10 - free shipping on orders above $60 Physical stores in Serangoon North like The Little Flower Store or Pet’s Station, and Pet Lover’s Centre are good places to look into as well. Carousell also has good and cheap options. a Don’t rely on pet store staff’s recommendations as they usually recommend harmful/low quality products like mineral chews and hamster shampoo. More on what to shop: https://sg.carousell.com/g/hamster-sg/recommended-hamster-neccesities/e105b6fc-d026-11e8-9494-0a580a041ba1
Is sterilising children play sand necessary?
Ok... I have been really curious whether scented bath is harmful or not And if it's harmful then what kind of sand do I use? I'm planning to get children play sand?
Where can I get a 30cm hamster wheel or a chinchilla wheel for my Syrians
“What is my hamster doing??” is what some of you may ask yourselves, especially those who’ve just entered the world of hamster keeping. Well this post is here to breakdown and explain some of those odd behaviours and hopefully allow you to gain a deeper understand about your hamster! Eating/pouching bedding Sometimes we might observe that our hamsters will start putting bedding into their mouth and storing them in their cheeks, well this is because your hamster is building its nest! The nest is usually where they’ll sleep, store their hoard of food and sometimes even pee there. They gather soft materials like paper bedding or tissue paper to construct a little cave they call home. Sometimes they will block up the entrance, which is part of their natural instincts. Clicking, chattering, or hissing Syrian hamsters will click or chatter their teeth to show displeasure and annoyance, this is a clear sign to back off! Or you may earn yourself a nasty bite. There’s also hissing which sounds a bit weird but it’s to tell you that they’re definitely NOT happy. These displays of aggression can be due to several reasons such as immense stress, being territorial or in a surprise case of pregnancy. Eating poop?? Or more specifically, Coprophagia. This practice of poop eating isn’t your hamster telling you to get better food, it’s actually a way for them to stay healthy! There are some nutrients that can only be obtained through eating their food twice and it helps them digest what they couldn’t the first round. It’s weird, but there are quite a few other animals that practice coprophagia as well. Backflipping hamsters As funny as it is to unknowing humans, backflipping hamsters aren’t a laughing matter. A common name for this behaviour is ‘stargazing’ which is when a hamster stands on its hind legs stares upwards and falls or flips backwards. There are various other symptoms of stargazing and different reasons why this happens but generally, it’s usually caused by bad genetics resulting in a neurological disorder. It’s something the hamster can’t control and it’s pretty hard to treat. These hamsters are often under a ton of stress so it isn’t easy to care for them. That said, if you have a star gazing hamster please do more research as to how to help it. Female Syrian freezing up It’s not uncommon for first time syrian owners to be stunned when their female syrian freezes up on all fours with their tail perked, this seemingly innocent position is actually the posture they take to prepare for a male to mount them! Another sign that a female is in heat is that they would give off a pungent smell, although the potency varies from hamster to hamster. Female syrians go into heat every few days so this is perfectly normal. Hopefully I’ve helped to answer some questions, and if you guys have anything else that isn’t covered here feel free to ask
I think a lot of us at one point have wondered whether our hamsters can eat and enjoy hay, well this post will hopefully address these issues and shed some light on hay! Hay by itself 🌾 Hay on its own, isn’t very yummy to hamsters. Our fluffy munchkins’ diets mainly consist of grains (seeds, nuts etc), insect protein (mealworms, crickets) and maybe some herbs (flowers, roots) or fruit. Hence hay on its own isn’t very appetising, and would probably only serve to increase fibre even if the hamster does eat it. However, hay can be used as part of the bedding! Although only ORCHARD GRASS hay should be used as it isn’t as pokey and stiff, which lowers the chances of your ham being injured or poked. You can often see them used in natural enclosures, or just themed cages looking to add some green. Hay based food 🥗 Hay based foods such as Oxbow are great for rabbits and guinea pigs, but NOT for hamsters. In fact Oxbow is regarded as one of the worst foods you can give your hammie! Most of you will notice that hay based pellets in seed mixes will be eaten last if not totally ignored. So save your money and keep clear of Oxbow foods for your hamster!
Hi my hamster shits like 10 times when out of her cage. (Around 5 mins) Isit because she is scared? Or is this normal?
Hi all, I have a question about aspen beddings. So I currently use Kaytee's aspen bedding for my dwarf hamster and he likes to burrow in it. But I always feel Kaytee's aspen shavings are a little too thick and there are several large chunks for my liking also. Then I came across Zoo Med Snake Aspen online and the pictures seem to show smaller and thinner aspen shavings. So I was wondering if that would be okay for hamsters also, does anyone know or can advise? Thanks c:
i recently got a hamster and read that hamsters need 12 hours of dark and 12 hours of light! i keep him in my room, so there's light from 7am - 7pm, and from 7pm - 12am when i am doing work i turn on a lamp and occasionally the main light if i need to find something. will the lights i turn on in the evening affect his sleep schedule? and any other general advice regarding hamsters and lights
Hey fur kids! Today I'm sharing my hamsters German hamster cage! For any of u who don't know, german hamster owners try to mimic the wild environment of a wild hamster so there's a lot of wooden stuff, hay, bedding, sprays and just basicly it's just those kind of natural themed cages hopping hammy makes! My hamster, furball, is a winter white and *loves* natural theme cages! So my cage is the Ikea samla bin cage. (I'm trying to get hold of a bigger cage...) it is 584 sq inches of floorspace and doesn't have any levels... I like scatterfeed his food so that he can be more occupied at night as nd loves it. There pvc tubes underground and a mix of seed to keep him more entertained. He has 3 different types of substrates and that is, Aspen Oxbow paper based bedding And children's play sand There are different Chew toys hidden in the bedding and some sticks for him to Chew on and climb on Some other things I've noticed is that Germans like to add a variety of woods and substrates Hope you enjoyed the post and got some info. Bye! ☺️🐭🐁🐹🐀
