Planned and engineered during the Cultural Revolution by Jiang Qing 江青, the wife of Chairman Mao, eight revolutionary operas were produced, eighteen by the end of the period; they served as entertainment as well as propaganda for the masses. They told stories from China's recent revolutionary struggles against foreign and class enemies. They glorified the People's Liberation Army and the bravery of the common people, and showed Mao Zedong and his thought as playing the central role in the victory of socialism in China. Although they originated as operas, they soon appeared on LPs, in comic books, on posters, postcards, and stamps; on plates, teapots, wash basins, cigarette packages, vases, and calendars. They were performed or blasted from loudspeakers in schools, factories, and fields by special performing troupes. Included is a rare illustrated operetta (mini opera) script that promotes the Revolutionary Operas 样板戏 (Photo 3). The operetta (meant for children performers) is titled Praise Our Heroes Emulate Our Heroes 赞英雄 学英雄 that sing the praises (and synopsize) the Epic Operas: Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy(智取威虎山) The Legend of the Red Lantern(红灯记) Shajiabang (沙家浜) and Red Detachment of Women (红色娘子军) Photo 4 Table of Content I am harsh in my assessment of condition but still prefer not to deal with fussy buyers.
