Here on offer is a wonderful antique Newton Shakespeare & Co Ltd., Garrison enamelled cash tin or money box.
Newton Shakespeare & Co, made cash tins, jewellery boxes, cabin trunks and deed boxes, as well as japanned trays from about 1895. During the war period it moved into the production of munitions boxes.
This great money box is enamelled in black with gold and red designs and an ornate white metal handle. It is embossed with the registered design number 419605, this dates the design to 1903, designs were often manufactured for a number of years after registration. The surface, especially the base has suffered some surface marks, but it still displays well. The lock is embossed ‘HOBBS & Co LEVER LONDON’. Sadly the key is missing.
The interior has a plain black enamel finish the lid has a wonderful embossed gilt plate. It is embossed with the manufacturers details, it reads:
NEWTON, SHAKESPEARE & CO LTD
GARRISON WORKS, BIRMINGHAM
In the base is a lift out tray that has three sections with hinged lids, the central section has a wonderful locking mechanism with a patent number of 14774 and the year 1906. Below the tray is another storage space. The inside of the main lock repeats the information for Hobbs & Co.
The cash tin displays well.
The cash tin is being offered in good used antique condition, it measures about 24cm by 14cm by 10cm and weighs 1371g.
A great collectable piece. Use it as a jewellery box if you like.
