*Antique Book in Very Good condition* Find other rare books at: https://rarebooksetal.wordpress.com/ Title: The History of Don Quixote Author: Cervantes Publisher: Cassell, Petter and Galpin, London (undated, circa 1870s-1880s) This magnificent tome hardly needs an introduction. Cervantes' heroic tale of chivalry is perfectly complemented by Doré's incredible 400+ illustrations, including head-and-tail woodcuts for every chapter, and 118 full-page wood engravings (all accounted for in this volume). This early issue by Cassell, Petter and Galpin is simply my favourite edition of Don Quixote! Binding: Deluxe three-quarter black polished calf over what was originally purple (but has now faded to light brown) textured boards. Five raised bands on the spine with elaborate hand-tooled gilding in five compartments and over raised bands. Second compartment from the top dyed bright red with title handtooled in with gilt. Size: Royal 4to (approx 12 by 9 inches) -- Very heavy too;) Condition: Overall very good with minor wear to corners, spine and boards. Externally: Calf over spine is very slightly cracked in places, an issue of the leather drying out over time, and not a structural issue. Dent to the title compartment with exposure of the underlying cardboard. Minimal wear to head and tail of spine Otherwise, gilt tooling is fantastically bright, and the red title compartment is unfaded. Corners are sharp and calf binding is smooth with one or two nicks in places (not distracting). Some minor rubbing to the corners. Textured boards are slightly stained, but these are minor spots. One tiny bubble near the bottom of the front-board, nearly imperceptible. One tiny nick to the read board. Light shadow on the rear board, likely from a book end (preventing fading of that region), only clearly visible in bright light. All edges dyed reddish-brown Internally: Plain endsheets, no inscriptions or names of P.O.s, "Original Large Edition" written in pencil on front pastedown Hinges are in near fine condition with just a little cracking to the top and bottom of the front hinge Very tight binding -- this book was likely unread! Very fresh interior with just some minor spotting to the title page and endsheets. Some age-related toning to the pages and offsetting of engravings and ocassionally, text, on the facing pages -- an issue common to all volumes of this book. This is an unusually handsome copy of Don Quixote with a commanding shelf presence. It is extremely hard to find another copy in similar condition for this price as most available copies have seen better days are are better off used for reading than display.
