Journey to the West 西遊記 is a classic Chinese mythological novel. It was written during the Ming Dynasty based on traditional folktales. Journey to the West 西遊記 is also one of the four classics of Chinese literature. Written by the Ming Dynasty novelist Wu Cheng’en 吴承恩 during the 16th century, this beloved adventure tale combines action, humor, and spiritual lessons. Journey to the West 西游记 has strong roots in Chinese folk religion, Chinese mythology, Taoist and Buddhist philosophy, and the pantheon of Taoist immortals and Buddhist bodhisattvas are still reflective of some Chinese religious attitudes today. Journey to the West 西游记 has been immensely popular in China for over 400 years, on account of its fresh and convoluted plots, distinctive and life-like characters, profound and incisive ideological content, and light-hearted style.
