Just like an Apple tree will never produce Oranges, and vice-versa, and just in case you might be thinking about the possibilities of genetic alterations of fruits, we’re talking about “in the natural” here, so don’t go there please. It is written, “For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.” (Mt 13:12 NKJV) The truth in the above verse is especially astounding! All you have to do is to ask yourself two simple questions, “What do I have?” and “What do I not have?” An easy way about this is to do it in a “fill-in-the-blanks” method. So for instance, say I decide that I have Love and do not have Hatred, then…. “For whoever has Love, to him more Love will be given, and he will have abundance [of] Love; but whoever does not have Hatred, even what Hatred he has will be taken away from him.” You can fill in the blanks with anything you want but I believe it only works well with character or emotion related words. Some examples will be Patience/Impatience, Peace/Anxiety, Generosity/Stinginess, Compassion/Anger, Forgiveness/Unforgiveness, etc. Go ahead and try it, and see what you can come up with and what it means for you. In other words, if we each give Good out of the Goodness of our hearts, then we know that we have Goodness in us! And if we have some Goodness in us, then we can expect that we will have even more Goodness the more Goodness we give. The opposite is also true. If we give something bad, evil even, then we can expect to end up with more of that bad[ness] and evil we gave out. Some motivational speakers and positive-thinking authors put it in another way, saying “Whatever you focus on expands”; If you focus on succeeding, you’ll succeed. But I prefer to stick to desirable character traits and relationship, emotional and especially spiritual qualities rather than material or other superficial (and usually temporary) gains. So, what’s all this got to do with Salted Egg Lanterns©? Well, Everything! You see, the Salted Egg Lanterns© and subsequently (actually its still on-going) a whole new series of ceramic Artworks that I have designed and created (and am still in the process of doing so) was directly inspired by the consideration that we are “Salt and Light” (please read the "Beginnings" article on my website first if you haven’t done so). Salted Eggs are a symbol of Sustained Providence – a very good thing. Which means we will always have all and more than we ever need, because I believe in Divine Providence and Grace, and that God is always Good, and will always provide for all His children. We are not perfect (at this time) but we have been given a lot of good things. And because we have some Goodness in us, all of us, we can BE the Good “Salt and Light” we are supposed to be. We freely give what we have freely received (see the Ceramic Cold Diffusers© article). So I decided to try and put the two together, Salted Eggs and being Salt and Light, and ended up with my original Salted Egg Lanterns©. Every Salted Egg Lantern© is unique and individually hand-crafted. I mold each “egg” with a fixed amount of fine ceramic stoneware clay and apply a texturing method I created which I call “Pebble Pressing” (literally pressing pebbles of different sizes/coarseness) that results in a surface texture resembling the salted charcoal paste on traditional salted eggs. It’s a very pain-staking process but fortunately its really fun and I enjoy doing it. In fact the whole process of doing ceramics and pottery is very meditative and completely relaxing and therapeutic (for those of you who are thinking of trying)! Then I cut a sizable oval hole to allow a tea-light candle to be placed into the “egg” later, and some more (smaller) holes on the side and top, which allows the heat and light to escape the “egg” later. The texturing as well as the two groupings of cut-holes on each Salted Egg Lantern© are done spontaneously, inspired as such, so that every work is an Art, completely unique and original. Some people have commented that the two groupings of cut-holes resemble a pair of Japanese kois swimming together or near each other. Others see constellations of stars. I’ll leave it to you to decide, because no two Salted Egg Lanterns© are ever alike…it keeps it really fresh and fun to do for me. The “egg” is then biscuit-fired to 950°C in my baby electric kiln, then hand-painted with Underglaze colors and Clear Glaze (for the insides) and fired again to 1150°C. The whole process for each Salted Egg Lantern© can take up to 10 days or even a couple of weeks depending on the weather conditions (longer on colder/wetter days). It’s not an easy process, but I literally put my personal Seal on it, committed to crafting each piece with love every time, and fixing my hope on the joy and light I am confident it will bring to someone else’s life. Just place the Salted Egg Lantern© on the wooden ring that comes with it, pop in a regular-sized tea-light candle, preferably a nice scented one, fire it up and begin to enjoy the really lovely soft warm glow it gives off…puts you in a really relaxing and even romantic state right away! You’ll certainly agree each Salted Egg Lantern© is an altogether beautiful work of Art once you see the really mesmerizing lights flickering from within the two groupings of holes. They are really great and impressive conversational pieces to have around, especially if you own more than a few, in different colors for different occasions and effects, lit or unlit. Give them away to your friends and loved ones as expressions of your love for them and to tell them you truly appreciate them “lightening” up your life, or just to show them you want to add “taste” to and brighten up their lives!
