Beaucarnea, or Nolina as it's sometimes called, is often known as the Ponytail Palm, Bottle Palm Tree or Elephant's foot. They have been popular as houseplants for a long long time - their sleek bulb-like trunk and lush, long curly leaves make them visually stunning; and the fact that a ponytail palm is forgiving and easy in its care makes this an ideal houseplant for many people. The ponytail palm is actually not a palm, but a succulent. The common characteristics of this plant include a bulbous trunk, which is used to store water, and its long, hair-like leaves that grow from the top of the trunk like a ponytail, giving the plant its renowned name. Since this plant is a succulent, it grows best in semi-dry conditions. Do allow the soil to dry out significantly in between waterings. The ponytail palm is also drought-tolerant - its swollen base stores water, so occasional lack of water will do no harm. So if you're forgetful about watering, this may be the ideal house plant for you. In fact, the most common mistake with this plant is overwatering it. When in doubt, keep it on the dry side. At the top of its trunk, long, narrow green leaves grow in a cluster, curving downward like a plume of water from a fountain. Keep them dust-free by spraying leaves with water, then wiping them with a soft cloth. Cleaning the leaves will also help to prevent spider mites that prefer the same dry living conditions as the ponytail palm tree. This is also one of those houseplants that enjoy bright light - it'd in fact do better! If you could provide it with some sun, you will see the plant converting this into lush new visible leaves, i.e. more light equals more growth. The ponytail palm is slow-growing, so it rarely needs to be repotted. In fact, it grows best when it's pot-bound. So no worrying about having to repot this lovely and interesting houseplant that will be with you for a long long time! ;) Tags: indoor plants, indoor gardening, houseplants, beaucarnea recurvata, ponytail palm, elephant's foot, bottle palm tree, home decor, vertical garden, hanging garden
